Uccio Querci della Rovere Award
In honour of Uccio Querci della Rovere and to recognise an outstanding achievement and contribution to the breast cancer surgery, BASO announced the 'Uccio Querci della Rovere Award' in 2014.
Guidubaldo Querci della Rovere, MRCS and FRCS 1982; MD Padua
(1971); FRCS Edin(1981) (1946 - 2009) was a Consultant Breast
Surgeon at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.
Known as 'Uccio', he was born in Venice and followed his
father Aldo into medicine in Padua, qualifying in 1971. After a
spell working in Verona, and completing his National Service,
Querci della Rovere was awarded a Rotary Travelling Fellowship the
Royal Marsden in 1977. He went from there to St Margaret's
Hospital, Epping, under Michael Morgan. He had to fight hard to get
his Italian qualifications recognised by the General Medical
Council, culminating in winning a court case that set the precedent
for other European practitioners to work in the UK. He was
appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Marsden in
1993. He was a founder member of the Italian Medical Society
of Great Britain (IMSoGB) and its President in
2000-2001.
Uccio Querci della Rovere married Anna Morris in 1971 and
they had two daughters, Valentina and Francesca. His interests
included Wagner, Formula One racing, photography and
philosophy.
This new Award will be presented annually by BASO in
recognition of the international achievements of a surgeon working
in the field of breast cancer.
