Welcome to BASO ~ The Association for Cancer Surgery
BASO ~ The Association for Cancer Surgery is the Association that speaks as an umbrella organisation for surgical specialties treating people with malignant diseases. BASO ~ ACS was founded in 1971 by Ronald Raven, Surgical Oncologist, as a forum for surgical research and training for the benefit of patients with cancer. The Association represents surgeons and their centres across the United Kingdom & Ireland and has influence beyond.

BASO Rosetrees Grant Image

In celebration of its 50 years, BASO~ACS is pleased to announce a call for Research Grants in Cancer Surgery in partnership with the Rosetrees Trust.

This exciting new research grant call will run for one year initially and if successful, will continue for a further two years. The first round will be opening on 29th November 2021 with a deadline for submissions of 11pm on 4th February 2022. Read more...

British Association of Surgical Oncology Medal for Excellence

BASO medal for excellence

To mark the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Association, the BASO Council inaugurates the British Association of Surgical Oncology Medal for Excellence to recognise the role of individual surgeons or teams in the advancement of cancer care.

The BASO Medal for Excellence will be presented to a professional or a team in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the field of cancer surgery: excellence in research, clinical practice, education and innovation.

'Global Health Medal' awarded to BASO's 'Director of Education'

BASO~ACS  are delighted and proud that their Director of Education, Dr Afsana Elanko was awarded the Global Health Medal for her valued contributions to medical education and healthcare at the Global Health Awards in London on 5th October. This is a prestigious prize awarded only once a decade. The award was given in recognition of the work that Afsana has done for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. The oration was given by Professor Robert Kirby, President of BASO~ACS.  Other members of the National Council were in attendance to support her.

Afsana has built and maintained  links at the highest levels with other surgical societies, the surgical Royal Colleges and the main regulatory body, the General Medical Council. BASO benefits from Afsana's links as well as her drive and initiative. The President and National Council of BASO~ACS congratulate Dr Elanko on this well deserved award.
