OBITUARY: Mr Brian Kelly
The BASO and BASO Trainees Council is deeply saddened
to announce the passing of Mr Brian Kelly on 9th August 2024. Brian
was a dedicated member of the BASO and served as BASO Trainees
Group President from 2017 to 2018, making invaluable contributions
to the group and the field of cancer surgery.
A consultant surgeon at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and
Eastern Health in Melbourne, Australia, Brian's academic journey
included a Bachelor's degree in Medical Science in Anatomy, a
Master's in Healthcare Informatics from University College Dublin,
and a Doctorate of Medicine from the National University of
Ireland, Galway, where he researched circulating microRNAs in
Prostate Cancer. He also served as a Clinical Lecturer in Ireland
and the UK and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in
Ireland in 2017.
During his presidency, Brian significantly advanced BASO
Trainees' mission. He contributed to the European Association of
Urology guidelines on Male Infertility and was awarded the
prestigious TUF Fellowship in 2018. After completing his specialist
registrar training in the UK, Brian became a Consultant at
University Hospital Birmingham, specialising in cancer surgery for
bladder, testicular, prostate, and kidney cancers, as well as
Endourology. He was a triple fellowship-trained urologist, having
completed fellowships in Robotic Surgery, Oncology, and
Genito-Urinary Surgical Oncology.
Brian's dedication to his patients, pioneering work in
urological cancer surgery, and commitment to education and research
have left a lasting impact on the field. He will be greatly missed
by his colleagues, students, patients, and all who knew him. We are
grateful to Mr Dara Lundon, a close friend with Brian for sharing
valuable insight into Brian's life.
The Peter MacCallum Centre held a memorial in Brian's honour,
highlighting the profound impact he had on hundreds of trainees,
colleagues, and patients worldwide. His influence was felt deeply
by all who had the privilege to work with and learn from him.
