Uccio Querci della Rovere Award

In honour of Uccio Querci della Rovere and to recognise an outstanding achievement and contribution to the breast cancer surgery, BASO announced the 'Uccio Querci della Rovere Award' in 2014.

Guidubaldo Querci della Rovere (1946–2009)—known to all as Uccio—was a Consultant Breast Surgeon at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. Born in Venice, he followed his father Aldo into medicine, qualifying in Padua in 1971. After working in Verona and completing National Service, he was awarded a Rotary Travelling Fellowship to the Royal Marsden in 1977, later continuing his training at St Margaret’s Hospital, Epping, under Michael Morgan.

Uccio fought determinedly to have his Italian qualifications recognised by the General Medical Council, ultimately winning a landmark case that opened the door for other European surgeons to practise in the UK. He was appointed Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Marsden in 1993. A committed leader, he was a founder member of the Italian Medical Society of Great Britain and served as its President in 2000–2001.

He married Anna Morris in 1971 and they had two daughters, Valentina and Francesca. Beyond surgery, his passions included Wagner, Formula One, photography and philosophy.

The Uccio Querci della Rovere Award is presented annually by BASO to honour the international achievements of a surgeon working in the field of breast cancer
